What this calculator measures
CPM answers what you paid per thousand recorded impressions so two awareness buys of different sizes can be compared. Use it when you are choosing placements or reviewing a guaranteed buy — not when you need to know whether those impressions clicked or bought.
The metric is misleading when the impressions are not the same product. Served, viewable, and in-feed video impressions are not interchangeable, and a $4 CPM on a leftover network is not cheaper than an $11 CPM on the audience that actually converts. It is also misleading as a scale signal. Mira's course campaign at $8.40 CPM told her nothing about whether to triple spend; CPC and conversion rate did.
The common manual mistake is to enter reach instead of impressions. Reach is unique people; impressions count every serve. 40,000 people seeing an ad 2.5 times is 100,000 impressions. Using 40,000 in the denominator prints a CPM 2.5× too high and makes a cheap placement look expensive. The other error is mixing currencies or comparing a $500 test week with a $12,000 month without saying so.
Jordan compares two awareness placements for a $49 workshop. Placement A: $500, 100,000 impressions, $5 CPM, 0.4% CTR, almost no sales. Placement B: $720, 60,000 impressions, $12 CPM, 1.8% CTR, 9 registrations. B is 'more expensive' on CPM and cheaper per registration. If she had bought more of A because $5 looked efficient, she would have bought cheaper wallpaper. CPM ranked the buys. It did not pick the winner.

Inputs and variables
- Solve for
- Enter the value used by this formula.
- Campaign cost
- Enter the money amount used by this formula.
- Impressions
- Enter the value used by this formula.
- CPM rate
- Cost per 1,000 impressions.
How to use the calculator
- Choose a display currency when money fields are present.
- Enter values that cover the same period, scope, and currency.
- Review the result, formula, and worked example before using the estimate in a decision.
- Change one assumption at a time to understand what drives the result.
Worked example
- 1Placement A spends $500 on 100,000 impressions: $5 CPM.
- 2Placement B spends $720 on 60,000 impressions: $12 CPM.
- 3B converted; A did not. The lower CPM was the worse awareness buy for this offer.
How to interpret the result
Compare CPM only across like placements, audiences, and impression definitions. A low CPM is not a good campaign. Use CTR, CPC, and conversion rate before you treat cheaper impressions as a reason to raise budget.
Common mistakes and limits
- Entering unique reach instead of impressions.
- Comparing viewable impressions with served impressions.
- Using CPM alone to decide a performance-budget increase.
- Mixing currencies or unequal date ranges.
Frequently asked questions
Is a lower CPM always better?
Only when the impressions are comparable — same audience quality, format, and viewability. A $4 CPM on leftover inventory can be more expensive per useful viewer than a $12 CPM on a tight placement. Pair CPM with CTR and downstream conversion before you buy more of the cheap one.
What is the difference between CPM and CPC?
CPM is cost per thousand impressions. CPC is cost per click. You can have a cheap CPM and an expensive CPC if nobody clicks, or a high CPM and a cheap CPC if the placement is tightly targeted. Use both; they answer different questions.
Should I use reach or impressions in this calculator?
Impressions. Reach is unique people. If 40,000 people saw the ad 2.5 times, impressions are 100,000. Using reach will overstate CPM and break any comparison with a platform that reports impressions.
Why did my CPM go up when I raised the budget?
You are probably buying a broader or more competitive slice of the same auction. That is a placement or bid diagnosis. It is not, by itself, a reason to kill a campaign that still converts, and it is not a reason to scale if CPC and conversion rate moved the wrong way.
Can I back-solve spend or impressions from a target CPM?
Yes. This calculator can solve for cost or impressions when you already know the CPM. That is useful for a media plan. It still does not say those impressions will be worth buying.
